Breastfeeding and Birth Control

Got questions regarding breastfeeding and birth control pills? Many moms do.

Although most drugs are judged by their ability to enter breast milk, some drugs (like birth control pills) can actually affect how much breast milk you make, either increasing or decreasing your breast milk supply.

Effect on Breastmilk SupplyEarly in breastfeeding, lactation is very sensitive to your body’s level of prolactin, the milk-producing hormone. Drugs that increase prolactin early on, such as metoclopramide (Reglan), domperidone, and other dopamine antagonists, may actually increase your milk supply.
However, some drugs, such as birth control pills with estrogens, are well known for decreasing milk supply if given too soon after birth.

If You Try Breastfeeding while Taking Birth Control Pills

Discuss with your doctor options for breastfeeding while using birth control, but stay away from estrogen-containing birth control pills until at least six to eight weeks after you have given birth.

Then watch your milk supply closely. If it seems to decrease, stop the birth control pills. Sometimes just switching the type or brand of pill you are taking will help.

However, Be Warned.

I have several friends whose milk totally dried up as soon as they started the estrogen-containing pills. (I just started menstruating again as soon as I did...what a bummer!)

The Mini-Pill

Another option for breastfeeding and birth control is the mini-pill. Similar to the regular pill, the mini pill is a month-long series of progestin-only pills that must be taken every day.
Normally the mini pill is less effective than the regular estrogen and progestin pill. However, when combined with breastfeeding, it is almost 100% effective when used properly!

I used these pills with all of my children until I had reduced to breastfeeding only a couple of times a day and my sweeties were getting more than 50% of their daily intake from food other than breast milk. The mini-pill worked wonderfully and even kept me from having a period!

Just Remember

There are many options to prevent pregnancy, and you may want to consider all other options first…especially before trying regular estrogen-containing pills.

Advice on overcoming these hurdles

Pregnant women have less sex than they’re used to having, particularly in the last trimester, research suggests. Considering that sex is usually safe, free and a good way for partners to stay close during what can be a stressful time, why is this? “Women aren’t having intercourse during pregnancy for many reasons,” says Shannon Clark, M.D., an assistant professor in the department of OB-GYN at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. “They’re experiencing physiological and hormonal changes that impact their desire, they don’t have a lot of energy, they’re carrying around more weight, and their growing belly may get in the way.” They also often fear that having sex could be risky. Here’s Clark’s advice on overcoming these hurdles:

PROBLEM: Low or mismatched desire

SOLUTION: Communicate, especially during the first and third trimesters when many women are tired, nauseous or uncomfortable and feel insecure about their changing bodies. The problem is, many men take this lack of interest in sex personally and see it as rejection. No one is a mind reader. “The woman needs to talk about these changes with her partner,” Clark says.

PROBLEM: Fear of hurting the baby or triggering labor

SOLUTION: Get the green light from your doctor or midwife to put your mind at ease. According to Clark, as long as you have no risk factors that may rule out intercourse (these include cervical incompetence, placenta previa, carrying multiples or a history of preterm labor), you’re not going to imperil the pregnancy. Plus, the baby is well-protectedfrom poking as well as bacteria by the cervix and amniotic fluid. And contrary to what most people believe, intercourse won’t trigger labor, even at full term.

PROBLEM: Sex is awkward or uncomfortable

SOLUTION: Try new positions; just avoid lying flat on your back or having direct pressure on your belly. “The best positions, especially as the pregnancy progresses, are with the woman on top, either in bed or on a chair,” says Clark. “Lying on her side, ‘spooning’ with her partner, is also a good option.”

Q: Are there any harmful effects on the fetus?

A: No. In fact, it might even feel like a little massage!

Q: Are orgasms ever less intense?

The expectations and experiences that mothers face can be related to the type of care and the culture that the expectant mother is exposed to. The study, “Childbirth expectations and experiences in Belgian and Dutch models of maternity care” conducted by Wendy Christianens, Mieke Verhaeghe and Piet Brake (Journal of Reproductive and Infant Psychology, Vol 26, No 4, Nov 2008, 309-322, Department of Sociology, Ghent University, Belgium) sought to confirm how a mother’s exposure to societal norms, previous experiences, other people’s stories and the way their care giver attend to the perceived needs and expectations account for the actual event’s experience and the level of satisfaction on the mother’s behalf. Belgium and Dutch women develop different patterns of expectations during their pregnancies and tend to have diverging birth experiences according to the care provided to them during their gestational and postpartum periods. The researchers expected that Dutch women would have a more positive outlook about childbirth than Belgium women, though there was no expectation of difference of experiences versus expectation between Belgium and Netherlands due to the socialization processes as a function of the maternity systems...

A man who used to be a woman has become Britain's first "male mother" by giving birth to a son.

The man, who is believed to be in his 30s, was able to carry a child after taking female hormones to reverse the effects of his female-to-male sex change treatment.

The Daily Telegraph understands that the man, whose identity has not been diclosed, is from the West Midlands and is in a long-term relationship. It is not clear whether his partner is male or female.

Last night medical ethics experts called for a full inquiry into the issues surrounding transgender births, saying the interests of the child should not be risked to "fulfil the rights of an adult".

Although he has legally changed his gender to male, the man in question was able to give birth last year because his womb was not removed during the original sex change procedure.

It is possible for transgender men who were born women, who still have functioning ovaries and a uterus, to become pregnant while still identifying and living as men.

Fetal movement counting has been proven to be a safe in telling the condition of the fetus. It is a test that a pregnant mother can do all by her self. It is based on the premise that a healthy fetus has several periods of activities in a day so that no movement or a sudden distinct decrease in the movement may mean a decrease of oxygen to the baby. Some obstetricians may ask their patients to routinely perform this while others only suggest this if the mother is considered high risk and there is concern for the baby’s well-being.

Fetal movement counting is done late in the pregnancy, on the third trimester and usually on the thirty second gestational week and onwards unless your care giver sees it necessary to perform earlier. There have been conflicting studies about the conclusions of the test. Some show that there has been a decrease in the number of stillbirth from low risk women while others do not show any distinct advantage. A disadvantage may be in the length of time it takes to do the test, usually as long as an hour or so a day and every day for a given period of time. It may also cause needless anxiety to the mother wondering if her baby is moving or not and if it may mean her baby is not well. This increase in the level of anxiety is sometimes deemed as unnecessary pressure on the overly concerned mother especially since there has been no clear improvement in the results of the outcome. However, the advantages are; it is non invasive and easy to do. It is also convenient because one does not have to go to the hospital or her doctor’s clinic to perform the test. Best of all it is cost efficient. Other mothers find it amusing since they get to know the activity levels and movement patterns of their baby.

It is normal for babies to move several times during the day. Some are remarkable active while others are not so active. They have several active movements when they are awake and quiet periods when asleep characterized by less movement. Reduced activity is felt in the latter part of the pregnancy however it does not slow down remarkably. Other wise this may mean there is valid concern and it is best to advice your care provider who may perform more tests to rule out the problem. A nonstress test may be performed or even an early delivery if necessary. When observing the fetal movement counting, we are actually looking for a marked decrease in the movement. However if a dramatic increase in activity is monitored over a few hours, it is also note worthy and must be reported as well. This could mean a decrease in the oxygen of the fetus which could perhaps be a result of a placental problem or pressure from the umbilical cord.

The method is very simple. It is done to keep track of the number of movements your baby does. One possible way is the count-to-ten method. Set aside a certain time each day where you can be relax and undisturbed so you can focus on your baby’s movement. Chose that period in the day where you observe the baby moves the most. Usually it is in the evenings after dinner. It may also be the most convenient time. Chart the movement daily, roughly at the same time. Do not worry if you miss a day every now and then. When you are ready to begin, choose a comfortable position. Start to record the time it takes for your baby to move ten times. Hiccups are not included. Sometimes it could be a long squirm and other times a quick kick. A long movement must be distinctly recorded from the start of the movement to the end of the movement and is considered only one score even if there were several fast kicks that came along with it. This varies on an individual basis. If your baby is asleep, you may try to wake him up by making a loud noise or you could wait until he is awake. The important thing to note is how your baby’s number of movements compare with his own chart and not with another’s. If there has been no activity within twelve hours, report this to your doctor.

Hi Mrs. Chiqui, my wife gave birth yesterday Nov, 8, 2011 via normal delivery. She was induced by our OB kasi her amniotic fluids were low normal. She's past her due date narin by 2 days..Anyway, we got to the hospital around noon time, Monday and she was given Buscopan & Cerviprime upon arrival. By 9 pm, blood came out already and she was 3 cm dilated. Then by 12 midnight she was already around 4-5cm dilated and she was already begging for for the epidural so the doctors gave it to her. When the doctors did an IE around 2am we were all surprised to see that she was already 9cm dilated. My wife started to push around 3 am and our baby came out around 04:14am.

Your class really helped us a lot. Through out the entire labor, we didn't feel lost and can relate to what the doctors were telling us. Thank you very much!

My OB decided to induce me since my amniotic fluid was low and my cervix wasnt progressing- (less than 1cm) and the contractions that ive been feeling wasnt enough. I was induced around 1pm on Nov.7 and right after that i was contracting1-2 mins of interval. They gave me cerviprime and buscopan to be injected on me every 4 hrs. I felt the contractions right away and was in pain. got stuck at 1cm for almost 8 hrs. and around 9pm my cervix measured 3cm. At that time i was already begging for epidural since my contractions were constant (less than a minute a part) and lasting for 1 min. But the doctors said that they can't give me epidural yet. At that time, i was giving up on having a normal dlivery because i couldnt handle the pain. Good thing my mom and my husband (was admitted at the high risk pregnancy unit in St lukes global) was there to motivate me to have a normal delivery. Around 1130pm my cervix was already 5 cm so they decided to give me the epidural. But it lasted for 2 hrs only, i was crying and was in extreme pain. around 230am they checked and said that i was fully dilated and around 4am i gave birth already.

The childbirth class helped a lot since it gave me an idea on what will happen during labor and delivery. My doctor told me that i pushed well and that my breathing was correct. Thank you for having a class like this bec it prepares future parents how to handle childbirth!

PRAISE AND THANKS BE TO GOD FOR A FAST, NATURAL AND SAFE DELIVERY. We labored for under 5 hours, with no epidural, and gave birth to a healthy baby girl. January 15, I woke up to my husband getting ready to go to our friend's engagement party. Time check, approx 8am. I had been experiencing slight abdominal and back pains that night but that was nothing unusual. I attributed it to being exhausted from the baby shower the day before. Hubby went to take a shower and I lay back in bed to catch more Zzzs. Not long after, I heard a pop, similar to the sound of a bone being dislocated but coming from inside my belly. I got a bit worried thinking something had happened to Lima Bean. She let out a gentle kick as if to comfort me that she was ok. Then I felt the trickle... It was light at first, but as I stood from the bed it started to flow. I screamed to Vince... ITS TIME! MY BAG JUST BROKE! We started scrambling around in a calm panic, calling everyone that needed to be informed and getting our labor bag together. The contractions started to kick in but it felt very manageable. I was determined to feel fresh so I took a quick shower, put on light makeup (for the pictures! haha), then headed to the hospital. By that time the contractions started to get stronger but still manageable. I had to stop what I was doing everytime a contraction would kick in just to keep my bearings. We got to the hospital and went through the whole standard hospital ops until I eventually found myself in the OB Gyn complex getting an IE. Time check, a bit passed 9am. True enough, my bag had broken. A quick IE showed that I was already 5-6cm dilated, 80% effaced. Baby was on +1 station though, still a bit high. I was in active labor. The pain was very tolerable at this point. I was still able to talk cheerfully between each contraction. I stuck to my breathing and forgot about each contraction by the time it had passed. Then I was wheeled to the birthing room just as my mom arrived. There they strapped me to a monitor and put an IV of saline to keep me hydrated. Time check, probably around 10am. It was now all up to my body to do what God intended it to do. Vince, Mom and I just waited for nature to take its course. The contractions started to quickly get stronger to a point where I could no longer talk during a contraction but still smile and speak when the contraction was done. I remember thinking... this is EASY! The pain was there for sure, but nothing excruciating. Another IE showed I was a good 6cm dilated, but still +1 station. Then things got a bit blurry from here. Time flew very fast. I estimate it was around 11am when the OB and the pedia arrived. A quick IE showed I was 8cm but still +1 station. Baby had to start coming down now! The pain was worse, it was harder for me to smile for pictures (although I still did, hehe). In my mind I thought, this is not as bad as I imagined! I remembered everyone telling me the pain was going to be like none Ive ever felt... I thought, yeah its painful but its not THAT crazy! Then like a train it hit me. Really quickly it went from manageable to crazy painful, then to I think Im losing it, to I think Im gonna die kind of pain!!!! YUP! It was like NO PAIN IVE EVER FELT. But I had gone so far! No way Im gonna quit now! Plus I kept thinking, if I get an epidural the doc will ask me to hold still while he sticks a needle through my back? How am I supposed to hold still like this? So instead, I kept at it. I visualized the pain with a purpose. I needed these crazy contractions to get our baby out. I kept a steady breathing pattern (or tried to at least) and whined like a cat with each breath. I listened to my mom's coaching telling me to get above the contraction, telling me that the contractions were good contractions, reminding me to relax and breathe. And I found comfort in the hand of my husband (that I gripped so tightly he thought it would break) and his voice telling me how many seconds I had left before the contraction would pass. Next thing I remember was my OB coming in to do another IE. I was 10cm, zero station (still high but better). I remember feeling my baby's head grinding down below and knowing that it was time! Doc went to change to a sterile gown while the nurses set up the room to deliver that baby. I remember at that point the contractions started to get less crazy. When everything was ready, Doc said to try to push on the next contraction. With one push the baby's head started to become visible! A few pushes later though, our baby's heartbeat started to drop. That's when I sensed that the OB wanted to get that baby out. A resident doctor stood beside me, put 2 fists on my top belly, and with her whole weight started to push down on me! I felt like I was being massacred!!! Looking back, it was kind of crazy but during that time all I could think of was that we had to get that baby out fast!!! With each mash, I helped best I could by pushing as hard as I could - with or without a contraction. A few seconds later I felt the pressure let loose below and her head pop out. With that, our little Sophie greeted the world with a healthy cry. Time check, 12:48pm. Later on I found out that the drop in her heartbeat was caused by her cord wrapped around her neck... but just as expected, our Sophie was strong and healthy as can be. She was given a 9/10 apgar score! Welcome to the world Sophia Alessandra!

Many women get some kind of depression after birth, usually observed on the third day. It comes in different degrees. Many husbands are confused and don’t understand what is happening to their wives. The women themselves feel strongly about certain issues and get overly emotional without realizing that they are having the baby blues. Symptoms are crying, restlessness, irritability, insomnia, confusion, exhaustion, over sleeping, not caring for the baby or too much of it and feelings of guilt. This is sometimes brought about by a discontented experience in labor, birth or hospital stay or some trauma. Added here is the stress of having a new born baby who is completely dependent on her. She tries to adjust to her new role as mother and nurturer. The many changes in her life and a lack of sleep and support make it more difficult for her to adjust. This could be partly hormonal and is to be expected. However, a few mothers go into postpartum depression characterized by the same symptoms but more exaggerated and getting worst. Some have repulsive thoughts about their baby that come and go. If these symptoms get worst and is accompanied by hallucinations and confusion, this could be a serious case of postpartum psychosis.

We now know that there are three predisposing factors that trigger postpartum depression. They are:

1.Relationship Factors

2.Biological Factors

3.Psychological Factors

So, if the woman’s family has a history of depression and or she has a history of anxiety and panic attacks, she may be prone to it. Other risks would be marital problems or being a single parent. A woman who thinks she could do it all and has the super woman syndrome. On the other hand it could also happen to a woman who is not confident in taking care of her baby. Other causes of postpartum depression could be if the baby has some kind of disability or health problem, or it could be a hormonal problem like a thyroid imbalance.

Seek help when her condition seems to worsen and continues for more than two weeks. When no one is able to help her any more with what she’s feeling and it’s over whelming. Ask for help when life is beginning to be more difficult than normal.

It would be best for the mother to be able to talk to someone about how she feels. She should get as much support as she can after birth. While the mother baby’s her baby, somebody ought to be “babying” the mother. She should try to get as much rest and sleep. When the baby sleeps, sleep! She needs to be able to drink and eat a well balanced diet. For the first two weeks she should only take care of herself and her baby until she is able to adjust to her new role. So for the husbands, do not be overly demanding and learn to do some house hold chores. If you want something done, do it. Help out in the house until your wife is able to adjust to her new role. Find a helper, it could be her mother or sister or even her best friend. Hire a maid to look after her. Continuously encourage her, praise her for the work she is doing. Tell her how proud of you of her for taking such good care of your baby. Be a support to her during this difficult time. You can put the baby to sleep, burp the baby or change his diapers to allow the mother more sleep. After all, a happy wife makes a happy husband.

“I was seven (going eight) months pregnant then. It started with a few itchy wheals on my abdomen. The next thing I know, my body was covered with rashes- from my arms, torso down to my legs. The itch was driving me crazy. The hives was so widespread I would often refuse to go out for fear of people’s reproachful eyes.”- Mommy March

This was how my student in the Bradley method child birth approach recollected her harrowing experience while being pregnant with her first and only son. Both her OB GYNE and dermatologist were not sure as to what exactly her skin condition was and as to what caused it – one posits that it is an allergy caused by some unknown allergen from the environment or from food that she has eaten and the other simply said that it might be PruriticUrticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy also known as PUPPP with its cause not being definitively known yet.

March is just one of those “lucky” mothers who suffered from a serious skin problem while being pregnant. If you consider dark spots or Chloasma as terrible, or stretch marks, spider and varicose veins as eye sores, by all means count your blessings as some women like March would opt to swap positions with you anytime in a heartbeat.

PUPPP

PUPPP is one of the worst skin conditions a woman can suffer while pregnant. This occurs in 1 out of every 200 pregnancies. The itchy raised bumps usually start at the abdomen which can then spread to the arms, chest, back, legs and feet. This usually occurs in the last trimester of gestation. Although harmless to both the mother and the baby, this can be a cause of concern when the mother gets inadequate sleep (due to itching) which can lead to her losing weight. The rash, however, disappears on its own after a few days from delivery.

Prurigo of Pregnancy

Also a harmless skin condition that appears as many tiny bumps that look like bug bites. It can be found in all areas of the body. This can appear as early as the first trimester but usually common during the second trimester. This is less common than PUPPP as this can happen only to 1 out of 300 pregnancies.

Pemphigoid Gestationis

This is the rarest among the severe skin condition a pregnant woman can suffer from as this occurs in 1 out of 7,000 to 50,000 pregnancies. Initially, the itchy patches look like hives but then develop into lesions. The rash usually starts in the belly button and then spreads to the limbs. This condition usually starts in the third trimester and may cause preterm delivery and fetal growth problems. 5% of the babies delivered by mothers suffering from this will also have some noticeable rash when born.

Cholestasis of Pregnancy

This condition can affect 1 out of 50 pregnancies. The main symptom is the intense itching on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet which can spread to the trunk of the body. This usually starts during the third trimester and is caused by some liver impairment. Having this condition will require immediate medical attention as it can cause preterm delivery and other serious problems including fetal demise.

Except the last skin condition, all of the above skin irritations are treatable by anti-itch creams like Benadryl and Calamine lotions.

When asked how she dealt with her own battle of skin problem, March answered that she followed a proactive approach – which means she did not heavily rely on anti-itch creams nor dared try any cortisones or steroids, instead she closely monitored her weight gain and of course the foods she ate. She bought a notebook and pasted a pregnancy weight gain chart on it. She made sure that her weight gain is within the range considering her pre-pregnancy weight. Likewise, she jotted down all the food she ate daily and made sure she ate the prescribed combination of go, grow, and glow foods (fruits, cereals, vegetables, dairies/cereals and meats). She instructed her maid not to put any spices or seasonings, except salt, on her food. (Yes she ate just bland foods for at least 2 months.) Her snacks are mainly fruits or “kakanin.” She stayed away from processed foods and sweets especially chocolates as she realized that eating the latter intensifies the itching afterwards. She also made sure she had sufficient vitamin C intake. When faced with intense itching, she would soak herself in a bathtub for at least 15-30mins with ½ cup of apple cider vinegar combined in the warm water. This relieves the itching and allows her to sleep soundly for at least 2 hours.

It was a hell of a battle, but with good diet, insurmountable effort of concentration, undying support from her husband and yes after having cried a river especially during the intense bouts of itching, she made it through. She is now a mother to a cute and healthy 6 months old baby boy and she has likewise successfully hurdled the 2008 bar exams despite being pregnant and overly distracted by intense itching during her bar review.

Similar to what she had done, a holistic approach to pregnancy as espoused by the Bradley Method of Child birth is very important. This is because excellent nutrition is always the foundation to a healthy pregnancy and labor. This allows the pregnant mother to embrace her situation and to make sure that she ingests no harmful food that can affect the development of her unborn child. This is a form of early training for the mother and the father in the birthing process and for them to realize that the birth of a child does not entirely start during labor but at the onset of fertilization.

If by any chance you are suffering from any of the above skin conditions while pregnant, seek medical attention promptly. Also, eat healthy and be healthy. Happy birthing!

i was in early labor at 2:30am of dec 21. we went to the hospital at 3:30am coz the interval was about 2-5min already. Although the pain was bearable and I could still smile, we just wanted to make sure. We were sent home to wait for the labor to progress as I was only at 2cm. My husband knew that it wasn't time yet as he remembered the pointers that was taught in the class. At 4pm the pain was getting unbearable so I told my husband that I think we needed to go to the hospital. We reached makati med at 6pm of the same day. It took me an hour to get to the car as the labor was painful already plus another hour traffic. This time I didn't have time to fix my hair and couldn't smile at all. When the OB checked i was already in transition phase (7-8cm). The doctor gave me epidural right away and after a few minutes the pain was all gone and it felt good hehe. At 7:47pm I delivered our son, Mateo Andres, at normal birth.

We stayed in a birthing suite which Dr. Henson also prefers since my husband will be with me. She didn't require shaving so the itch of growing hair wasn't a problem. She said there is no relation to infections naman daw. So good! She let my husband do the counting when I was pushing for the baby to come out and the cutting of the ambilical cord.

The birth class definitely helped. I was even referring to the manual as refreshers when I was having early labor. The class gave us a good conditioning on what we should do and prepared us for the birth itself. The breathing got me thru labor, my husband's involvement in the whole process (i.e. couching me on the breathing, giving me massages) was priceless and the pushing exercise we did surely helped me get thru the delivery.

The OB said in my next pregnancy remind her not to send me home even if I'm 2cm pa lng coz it'll be faster the next time around.

Oh, I am purely breastfeeding now. Very tiring. It's really a commitment but fullfilling at the same time knowing my baby will get the best nutrition. The plus side is I've almost lost the tummy of pregnancy (2-3 inches to go) and 20 pounds of my preggy weight in 10 days. Galing how God designed our bodies in relation to our babies - both benefits.

hi ms. chiqui! happy new year! sure you can grab photos!

My OB decided to induce me since my amniotic fluid was low and my cervix wasnt progressing- (less than 1cm) and the contractions that ive been feeling wasnt enough. I was induced around 1pm on Nov.7 and right after that i was contracting1-2 mins of interval. They gave me cerviprime and buscopan to be injected on me every 4 hrs. I felt the contractions right away and was in pain. I got stuck at 1cm for almost 8 hrs. and around 9pm my cervix measured 3cm. At that time i was already begging for epidural since my contractions were constant (less than a minute a part) and lasting for 1 min. But the doctors said that they can't give me epidural yet. At that time, i was giving up on having a normal dlivery because i couldnt handle the pain. Good thing my mom and my husband (was admitted at the high risk pregnancy unit in St lukes global) was there to motivate me to have a normal delivery. Around 1130pm my cervix was already 5 cm so they decided to give me the epidural. But it lasted for 2 hrs only, i was crying and was in extreme pain. around 230am they checked and said that i was fully dilated and around 4am i gave birth already.

The childbirth class helped a lot since it gave me an idea on what will happen during labor and delivery. My doctor told me that i pushed well and that my breathing was correct. Thank you for having a class like this bec it prepares future parents how to handle childbirth!

She was born at 3:15 am on the 26th of Dec at St. Luke's Global.
I started latent labour on the 24th and went in for an IE, but I had dilated only around 1 cm. I went home and was back the next day as the contractions were around 50 seconds long and 3 to five minutes apart. I was admitted after the IE as my baby's heart rate seemed to be dipping. She stabilized after I was put on oxygen and an IV drip for about half an hour.
I moved to the birthing suite, where they removed the IV and I was allowed to walk, do my birthing exercises and Sagar and me also worked with a birthing ball.
The contractions grew long and intense but dilation was just not happening despite being administered Bucospan, twice to thin the cervix. I had also lost my mucus plug early that morning.
Finally I was started on Oxytocin. But by midnight despite my contractions regularizing at a pain range of 120-130 and closely within each other, my cervix did not dilate. And my baby's heart rate started shooting up dangerously and we had to go in for a C-section.

However I was awake through the procedure and refused all sedatives. My baby latched on as soon as she was born and got an APGAR score of 9.9. Sagar was in the OT with me and cut the umbilical cord.

I did not use any pain relief through out the contractions, opting for abdominal breathing instead. I imagined each contraction as a high wave that I had to ride on to get to my baby. My attending nurse even said, 'Madam Chiqui's methods seems to be so effective. I have never seen anyone endure this high a contraction with only breathing'

Today Indrani is one week old and happily breast feeding and is the center of attention at home with both sets of grandparents around. She is the first baby in both our families

I just want to thank you for arming us with essential knowledge and perspective required for bringing a baby into our midst.

You have been such a positive influence through out this journey and I only wish that every expectant couple can have a teacher as wonderful as you.

Our baby girl was born early this morning. CS after 24+ hours of labour by Shweta!

We are naming her Indrani. After the Hindu goddess of insight. Who claims the skies as her realm, and manifests as slivers of lightning to banish the darkness of the night.

(My leanings to hyperbole, it seems, were reserved for this event)

Both mother and daughter are doing great and are resting after their marathon effort. :)

  Thanks Chiqui!:) I had epidural..contractions started at 12 midnight but I slept it off thinking it was just the normal contractions I would feel once in awhile. Then at around 5am I couldn't take it anymore. I asked my husband to get your handouts to check the notes on contractions to see if it was really time to go to the hospital already hehe! We got to the hospital at around 6am, the doctor did an IE and to my surprise I was just 1 cm but the contractions were really super painful. But the doctor said I was almost fully effaced so even at 1contractions were really super painful cm only, I already had an epidural. I gave birth at 4pm that day. Same birthday as my mom, August 14!:)

20111203 This was my final class for this year. The next batch will be sometime in February 2012.

We started at 9:00am and were finished at around 5:00pm. I tackled as much information as they could handle focusing on labor and delivery. All five couples were first time parents to be. They all had a chance to share to the group why they joined the birth class. Most of the couples objectives were to learn the relaxation techniques. Th husbands wanted to learn what to do during labor and how they could help their wives.

It was fun working with young couples who are going to give birth for the first time. They were full of questions and full of life. They asked: How can we make sure we will have breast milk? Can we change doctors? It might be too late and the new doctor does not have our records? Should we get a pediatrician already?

May all your babies be super healthy and your births be safe and beautiful May it be how you planned it to be. Congratulations to all of you!

Birth Class 205 One-On-One: Sunshine & Oliver, Pque

One-on-one Childbirth Class with Sunshine and Oliver last Nov. 27, 2011 was the first time I started a class at 2:00 to 10:00pm. Surprisingly, it wasn't tiring at all. They lived in the South and going there was difficult to find because I was from the East and hardly went in their area. Their house felt like home with all the Christmas decors out and a beautifully trimmed christmas tree. We stayed in their living room for the lecture and moved to their bed room for the actual hands on labor practice. It was peaceful. Sunshine said the rest of her siblings had already left and before our class they had a dinner reunion and it was a riot.
