Online Prepared Childbirth Classes during the CoVid19 Pandemic 2020

Rumours of the nationwide lock down was lurking  in the air. I heard it first from my daughter. It did not seem believable that it could possibly happen. And yet after a few days, on March 17, 2020, it did and they called it Enhance Community Quarantine! I could not imagine what that meant and its impact to all of us. This has never happened in my lifetime. Another first. My daughter said it meant that we could not go out of our homes. The hospitals will no longer be able to accommodate us if we got CoVid19 because the hospitals will be full from other patients so we would have to self heal if ever you get the virus. People started to panic buy in the groceries. One of the things that became scare aside from the canned goods were toilet paper, can you believe it? It's now December 9, 2020 and somehow the government has not been as strict as our country tries to straighten the curve. Meaning, to manage the number of people getting CoVid19.

I continued to teach Childbirth Classes. Starting April, I started Online Classes since the pregnant women and the seniors were not allowed to go out and were quarantined afraid to get the virus. We were the ones more susceptible because of age and condition and the sickness will be more serious if we got it.

I continue to be hopeful and grateful to God for the coming 2021 though we all know that this battle is not yet over. We continue to wait for a cure, a vaccine that is sae and has no side effects.

During this time, being with our families is an opportunity to bond and be closer to each other and to plan for what is ahead.

Thank you Lord for our god health and daily provision.

20200725 Arriane tells her birth story

The Newborn Class today was a mixed group unlike the usual classes we have. There were the first time pregnant mommies to be & Arriane who had just given birth two weeks ago. I asked her to share her experience and she was very open and honest to the group.

Christine was a first time mom and her greatest concern was how will it be when she gives birth alone without her husband there. Fortunately Arriane gave birth in the same hospital where Christine was going to give birth. How providential is that?! We got a lot of first hand information.

Arianne Was scheduled to visit her doctor & was due anytime now. When her doctor checked, she was already 4-5cm & she wasn’t even in pain yet. Her OB immediately reserved the birthing suit for her. It’s a good thing she did because there was another lady waiting to reserve the room after her. The suite came with a personal nurse who attended to her. This made her feel secure knowing she had a companion the whole time since her husband was not allowed to be with her. The room costs something like PHP P38,000. for 8 hours & was billed by the hour after that.

She arrived at 2pm and by 7pm her daughter was born. She was also allowed to bring her cellular phone with her. What a treat! Her husband reserved a room but he was allowed to be in there only when his wife is in the room. Living near, he decided to go home. I think it was a practical  decision since he didn’t really know what time the birth will end. It was also physically safer to stay at home. When the birth was done, she called for him to go back. It wasn’t until another two hours when he finally was allowed to go inside their reserved suite. Thats because the mother’s recovery takes a hour or two. She had a normal delivery using epidural at 8cm. The usual hospital stay is around 2-3 days. For your budget for a normal delivery, prepare anywhere from Php150,000 to Php200,000. More for a cesarean.

The government had declared ECQ, enhances community quarantine the first time in March 16. We were in total lock down in our homes. This CoVid19 was fast spreading & so dangerous for all especially for the senior citizens as well as for the pregnant moms. The hospitals had no direct protocols to follow in the beginning. Lives of people were at risk and taken, especially our brave front liners, the doctors and the nurses. So eventually the hospital had to protect their workers and their patients. They stopped allowing the husbands and doulas in accompanying the women in the labor and delivery room. So this caused more anxiety and fear to the pregnant moms. Adding To this was the fear of possibly contracting the virus themselves & worse, their baby.

We ended after seven hours including lunch break. At the end we all felt fulfilled, better equipped and knowledgeable and I think that that’s what’s important. Preparation education and support makes a pregnant mom feel less anxious & fearful.

20181125 Welcome Brianna Elise!

 In the bible it says,...

Psalm 127:3-5 New International Version (NIV)
Children are a heritage from the Lord,
    offspring a reward from him.
Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are children born in one’s youth.

It was drizzling and  & the sky was grey but inspire of the weather, I looked forward to Brianna’s baptism & excited that this tiny four months old baby is now going to be a Christian. What a wonderful thing that myy 2 daughters are her God parents.

I can't help but reminisce the birth of Bri's mother, my God Child. It was twenty two years ago when I was in the the hospital waiting for her to be born. I was privileged to be the first one to see her. The nurse from the operating room brought Bri's mom out for the family see. She was so fair and beautiful even as a baby. I can’t believe ‘that my God Child is now a full grown woman with her very own baby Brianna.Indeed every child is a blessing to the Lord!

What a wonderful circle of life! Many of us realise that It is only when we become mothers ourselves that we fully understand the sacrifices, the pain & the joys of motherhood. Parenting is a serious matter. It defines the child & makes her who she is. We need to raise them in the fear & in the knowledge of God because it gives them their identity & the security they would need when they grow up as individuals.

Welcome to our Christian world!

Dear Chiqui,
We wanted to thank you for your great class!
It was very helpful for us, even though I ended up having C-section, but 15 hours of contractions and other events wouldnt be taken by us easier if we wouldnt attend your class.
Here are some pics of our baby girl Anastaciya. She turned 2 months on August 5. :)
Thank you and God bless your work and ministry!

20130329 Article on First Time Father's Fears about Their Wives Birth

I sometimes ask my birth students what is the reason for their joining the class. Many share about their own fears in giving birth and in the hospital procedures.

In one particular birth class, I was surprised to find out that almost all of my would be mother's concern was with their husband's fear about their birth. Many were afraid of not knowing what to do during The Big Day, how they could help their wives. Other's joined because they wanted to understand what their wives were going though. Some wanted to bond with their wives and wanted to be involved. Some were afraid of blood. Other's were not sure of how they would react when they see their wives in pain. While many wanted to know when was the right time to take them to the hospital.

I've always liked the advice given by Robin Elise Weiss in her many articles regarding labor and birth. Here is one of them that I think would help new couples address the new dad's questions about their wives birth.

Article: Child Birth Orgasm: Best kept secret of labor? by Stray Telly

                                                             Orgasmic Birth

It is possible. It boils down to a change of perception about birth and a lot of preparation for "The Day".

Article by Chiqui: My First on Childbirth Class 20050525

Although my birth experience with my first child was natural, meaning no anesthesia or intervention, terrific and meaningful, my interest in teaching these classes happened after the birth of my second child. It was such a wonderful experience! I was very prepared for the birth, I took Lamaze classes. I was very fortunate to have two labor coaches with me. One was a famous singer, Carla Martinez who sang praise songs throughout the whole birth. My son came out praising the Lord with his hands waving in the air. It was fun giving birth to my son! I had a God fearing doctor, Mayette Sapaula who prayed silently before my delivery. I captured it all on film. My other coach, Grace Zorilla took the moving camera. My sister in law Suzette was at the window next door watching the whole event. Later on she said she thought I was going to die! She was single then and this was the first time she sow a live birth. Later on I was in turn with her in one of her births. My husband? He was in the waiting room nervous as ever. He was like one of many who would faint at the sight of blood and to hide his nervousness would be more jittery and panicky than I. I found it best not to force him to be with me in the birth or I might be more concerned for him than giving birth myself.

My son is going 16 years old now and the memory of his birth still lives in my memory up to this day. As clear as crystal! I thought this was something I could share to other couples. I wanted to give back to them the dignity of birth. To educate them and give them the kind of birth they want. To equip and prepare them for their labor and birth. To have them play an active role in the whole process and give them the opportunity to bond as a family. I had the determination to want to learn more and become a childbirth educator. This has become my mission. Till next time again. Good morning! Chiqui
